This study looked at the link between exposure to the 9/11 World Trade Center (WTC) terrorist attacks and panic disorder in New York City (NYC) school children (grades 6-12). Results show severe exposure to the event increased the likelihood of panic disorder. History of individual trauma also raised the risk. Attendance at a Ground Zero school was not associated with panic disorder. Preventive measures are suggested to address the impact of mass trauma on mental health, especially in children.
