About
This study aimed to determine the impact of Hurricane Katrina on cancer patients in affected counties. Data from cancer registries was used to analyze cancer burden in 75 counties in Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi eligible for FEMA assistance. The results showed that over 23,000 individuals had new cancer diagnoses, with most cases involving lung/bronchus, colon/rectum, female breast, and prostate cancers. Many patients were diagnosed at advanced stages. The study highlighted the importance of addressing the needs of displaced cancer patients, ensuring continuity of care, and utilizing cancer registry data for disaster planning and patient support.Tags
