About
Community engagement is vital for research, particularly in addressing racism and equity in science. It enhances study quality, diversity, real-world impact, and exploration of new research areas. This paper shares insights and best practices from a multi-institutional population health research group. The authors detail their structured approach to laying the groundwork for community-engaged research, emphasizing awareness, partnerships, and long-term relationships. Transitioning from informal to reciprocal engagement, we recommend capacity-building, leveraging community strengths, establishing accountability, and aligning with anti-racist principles for other research groups.
