This article explores how schools and communities affect children's mental health recovery after Hurricane Georges in Puerto Rico (1998). It describes a study with 1,637 children and caregivers who were interviewed about their experiences. For younger kids, hurricane exposure increased mental health issues, but school and community factors didn't matter much. For older youth, witnessing violence at school or in the community worsened mental health problems. The study highlights that both positive neighborhood environments and supportive teacher attitudes can help reduce these issues for non-exposed youth but not for those directly affected by the hurricane.
