As global disasters increase in frequency and intensity, the vulnerability of children during these events becomes more apparent. Children are vulnerable on a variety of levels including physically, mentally, and emotionally, as was made clear with the repercussions suffered by so many children throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. As pediatricians, we are obligated to advocate for child health, but often are not sure how best to do this in a disaster situation. This leaves pediatricians without any training on preparing families, mitigating poor outcomes, or assisting in recovery of a disaster. With the above in mind, this introductory course is designed to improve the pediatric emergency readiness of healthcare systems by providing easy access to research-informed care to better address the unique needs of children and their families experiencing a disaster. This course, the first in a series about pediatric disaster medicine, contains two modules on the following topics: * How to respond to a pediatric hospital search event. * How to respond to a pediatric clinic shutdown due to weather. This course is designed to empower pediatric residents, practicing pediatricians, and pediatric advocates with the knowledge they need to ensure children receive quality care during disaster events. The course consists of video scenarios, knowledge checks, and additional resources to dive deeper into topics of interest. Users should expect to spend approximately 60 minutes to complete all activities and skim the readings. This module targets pediatric residents, however, you may find this helpful if you are a pediatrician, APP, nurse, or any medical professional that directly cares for children.Tags
