About
The Workgroup explored three specific pediatric disaster education program efforts aligned with recommendations from the National Commission for Children and Disaster. FEMA's initiatives focus on planning for children's needs in disasters, community preparedness integrating children's needs, and pediatric disaster response courses. The "Whole Community" approach emphasizes understanding community needs, empowerment, and engagement. However, pediatric disaster education has not been a priority in whole community readiness efforts. Efforts to include children in disaster planning are inconsistent, influenced by assumptions and funding challenges. Recent progress includes including children in emergency plans, but sustainable engagement of public safety disciplines is needed. FEMA offers free online training courses for disaster preparedness, including programs focusing on children's needs.Tags
